Prosopopoeia V1

In my Sound work I focus on the power of sound spatialisation, ASMR (autonomous sensory meridian response)- I believe Sound is the threshold art form – leaving behind it an imprint in our memories like nothing else. perception / reception leads to recognition / analysis which leads to cognition / understanding. Sound invokes emotion and therefore a response. It is only through feeling through and within the body that human empathy can ignite. Using a performative approach whereby I recorded my own voice and an extremely varied experimental range of other sounds, I aimed to show what is hidden inside the mind of a female experiencing shame, guilt, conflict and judgement when reliving a memory or traumatic experience from the past or embodying the confused states we inhabit when ruminating on the Menopause, sex, loneliness, social expectations, death and relationships.

prósopon – face
poiéin – to make / do
A figure of speech when someone or something inanimate, imaginary or dead is represented through speaking or acting.

Quintilian writes of the power of this figure of speech to “bring down the gods from heaven, evoke the dead, and give voices to cities and states”.

PROSOPOPOEIA is made from internal body sounds like my own heartbeat, dogs, water, kitchen equipment, singing and recordings from the radio and youtube. I used an R26, a hydrophonic, tape and contact mics.
I worked from a sound library that I created in Logic Pro X, changing pitch, tempo, gain, enveloping, amplifying, stretching, repeating, fading, layering and vocoding sections.
The final piece was panned in logic pro X for a 5.1 surround sound installation.
